EVENTS

Wednesday, February 8, 2023, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, New Mexico State Capitol (directions are here).

The 2023 Legislative Field Trip will create advocacy opportunities for Changemakers fellows, Parents Together fellows, district/charter school parents, and selected high school students they wouldn’t typically have. Through conversations with legislators from their districts and bill sponsors, they will advocate for improving the quality of public education for all children and speak out about specific legislation. They will forge new relationships with education decision-makers and each other. The field trip also provides powerful learning experiences by hearing from Ben Austin, attending a legislative education committee meeting, and seeing how the education policy process works.

Participants will:

  • Meet key legislators and policymakers who can convey to them that they have influence and can shape education policy in New Mexico.

  • Better understand what a committee meeting looks like (and who testifies in these meetings).

  • Legislative Session 101: What is the legislative session? How do bills get passed? Who are the key players?

  • Learn from leaders with Public Charter Schools of New Mexico, NewMexicoKidsCan, Excellent Schools New Mexico and others about how they can advocate for their children and better policy.

  • Build a foundation for education activism in future legislative sessions.

This event's goal is to continue building momentum in the growing movement to improve the quality of New Mexico’s public schools.
